Iselin was a graduate of St. Mark's School, and Harvard, where he served as Managing Editor〔 (John Jay Iselin, Crimed )〕 of the Crimson. In 1959, he was selected as a Marshall Scholar, and in 2001 became founding Chairman of the New York Marshall Committee.〔

Until 2000, Iselin served as President of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Before that he served as president of WNET.
